In mid-April 2023, Gordon Lightfoot’s declining health led to the cancellation of the remainder of his 2023 tour. He passed away at the age of 84 on May 1, 2023, due to natural causes at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto. In the wake of his death, numerous tributes were held in his honor, including the ringing of bells at the Mariners’ Church in Detroit and St. Paul’s United Church in Orillia. While many celebrated Lightfoot as a quintessential Canadian artist, musicologist Alexander Carpenter emphasized that his influence reached far beyond Canada’s borders, and his music delved into both romanticized and more profound aspects of the country’s history. A private funeral took place on May 8, 2023, with Lightfoot laid to rest beside his parents at St. Andrew’s and St. James’ Cemetery.
