R.E.M.: "Nightswimming"

An R.E.M. “Sonic surprise”!

This one was certainly a “sonic surprise.” I had never heard this R.E.M. tune before it was requested. It has become one of my most popular arrangements. Let’s explore more about this sleeper hit!

About R.E.M.’s “Nightswimming”:

“Nightswimming” is a ballad by the American alternative rock band R.E.M., released as the fifth single from their 1992 album “Automatic for the People.” The song features singer Michael Stipe accompanied only by bassist Mike Mills on piano, with a string arrangement by John Paul Jones and a prominent oboe by Deborah Workman. It depicts a group of friends indulging in the nocturnal activity of skinny dipping, drawing from the band’s own experiences in their early years.

The song’s creation began when Mills played a circular piano riff in the band’s studio, catching Stipe’s interest. Stipe immediately composed lyrics to fit the melody, resulting in the melancholic yet nostalgic tone of “Nightswimming.” There is speculation about the song’s inspiration, with Stipe suggesting it was inspired by a night watchman hired to guard the band’s offices, while Mills and guitarist Peter Buck recall fond memories of skinny dipping with friends in Athens, Georgia.

Upon its release, “Nightswimming” received critical acclaim, with reviewers praising its serene atmosphere and poignant lyrics. It reached moderate chart success in the UK and Australia. Rolling Stone readers later voted it as one of R.E.M.’s best songs, and in 2021, Rolling Stone ranked it at No. 160 on its list of the “Top 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.” The song’s music video, directed by Jem Cohen, presents a poetic visual accompaniment to its themes and has amassed millions of views on YouTube.
