Madonna: "Into the Groove"

About “Into the Groove”:

“Into the Groove” is a song by Madonna, featured in the 1985 film “Desperately Seeking Susan.” Co-written and produced by Madonna and Stephen Bray, it was inspired by the dance floor and written while observing a Latin American man she was attracted to. Initially intended for someone else, Madonna decided to use it for the film’s dance scene. It was later added to the international re-issue of her album “Like a Virgin” and remixed for various compilations.

The song, characterized by synthesizers and drum machines, features Madonna’s double-tracked vocals and carries sexual undertones, inviting listeners to dance. Despite not being officially released in the US, it reached number one on Billboard’s Hot Dance Singles Sales chart. In the UK, it became Madonna’s first number one hit and remains her best-selling single. Critically acclaimed, it was voted the best dance single of the 1980s in a Billboard poll and is regarded as Madonna’s best single by many.

While no official music video was made, a compilation of scenes from “Desperately Seeking Susan” accompanied the song’s release, receiving heavy rotation on MTV. Madonna has performed “Into the Groove” on several concert tours, and it has been covered and sampled by various artists.
