About Gin Blossoms

Gin Blossoms is an American alternative rock band formed in 1987 in Tempe, Arizona. Their rise to prominence came with the release of their first major label album, “New Miserable Experience,” in 1992, which included the hit single “Hey Jealousy.” The song reached No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 4 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks, earning the band significant recognition and a gold record. The album itself went on to achieve quadruple platinum status, solidifying Gin Blossoms as one of the leading bands in the alternative rock scene of the 1990s.

Despite their commercial success, the band faced internal struggles, particularly with lead guitarist and songwriter Doug Hopkins. Hopkins, who contributed significantly to the band’s early success, battled alcoholism and depression, leading to his departure from the band before the album’s release. Tragically, Hopkins died by suicide in December 1993. The band continued without him, but his absence left a lasting impact on their future endeavors.

Following their breakup in 1997, the band members pursued individual musical ventures. However, they reunited in 2001, with Scott Johnson taking over as lead guitarist. Despite lineup changes, the band’s chemistry remained intact, and they continued to tour and release new albums, including “Major Lodge Victory” in 2006 and “Mixed Reality” in 2018.

Gin Blossoms’ musical style has been described as a fusion of alternative rock, jangle pop, power pop, and post-grunge. Their songs often feature introspective and world-weary lyrics combined with catchy and upbeat melodies, a signature characteristic that has endeared them to their devoted fan base. The band’s “Mill Avenue sound,” influenced by the southwestern music scene in Arizona, sets them apart and contributes to their lasting appeal in the alternative rock genre.

Throughout their career, Gin Blossoms has maintained a loyal following and has continued to perform on various tours and musical events, showcasing their enduring influence in the alternative rock landscape. Their resilience, dedication, and ability to create music that resonates with audiences have solidified their status as one of the defining bands of the 1990s alternative rock era.

Included in the songbook are what I consider to be the most iconic Gin Blossoms tunes from the 1990s. These are all available as separate singles, but you get the most value by purchasing the whole collection.

  1. Hey Jealousy
  2. Follow You Down
  3. Found Out About You
  4. ‘Til I Hear It From You
  5. Allison Road

The arrangements are at an intermediate level and sit under the fingers nicely.
