In season 3 of “Only Murders in the Building,” Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) attempts to revive a failed theatrical production by turning it into a hit musical. The show, titled “Death Rattle Dazzle!” features a murder mystery with infants as prime suspects. Despite the absurdity, the episode suggests that the plan might work. The highlight is the ending sequence of the musical, titled “Grab Your Hankies,” featuring powerful performances by Meryl Streep and Ashley Park.

The emotional scene unfolds in Oliver’s living room, where the fate of the musical is at stake during a presentation. The musical theater veteran Benj Pasek, co-writer of the in-show musical’s songs, emphasizes the high stakes, likening it to singing for one’s supper. The pivotal moment sees Oliver changing his chosen song at the last minute, presenting a ballad titled “Look for the Light.”

Performed by Meryl Streep’s character, Loretta Durkin, the song starts as a comforting lullaby and evolves into a vow of steadfast guardianship. Co-written by Sara Bareilles, the piano-driven ballad beautifully blends a declaration of love with a touch of melancholy. The opening chords allude to Siddhartha Khosla’s Emmy-nominated score for “Only Murders in the Building.”

Sara Bareilles, who was assigned the song before the script was finished, acknowledges the show’s balance between the heightened and the grounded, aiming to create something framed in an absurd way yet carrying genuine emotional depth. The lyrics, while not explicitly mentioning the murder plot, focus on the lighthouse setting and explore the longing and ache of motherhood as a beautiful metaphor.
