“Last Christmas” is a timeless Christmas pop song by the British duo Wham!, composed of George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley. Released on December 3, 1984, the song has become a holiday classic, known for its heartfelt lyrics and catchy melody. The track tells the story of a past romance that ended the previous Christmas, leaving the singer with feelings of heartbreak and longing. Despite its festive backdrop, the song carries a bittersweet emotion, making it resonate with listeners.

Over the years, “Last Christmas” has been covered by numerous artists, including Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, and Backstreet Boys. In the UK, the song experienced chart success, spending multiple weeks at number two on the UK Singles Chart during its initial release in 1984. It eventually reached number one on the chart in 2021, over 36 years after its original release, making it Wham!‘s fifth UK number one single. The song’s popularity extended beyond the UK, reaching number one in various countries, including Germany, Denmark, and Sweden. The song’s accompanying music video features scenes of heartbreak and nostalgia, as well as a ski resort setting that captures the essence of the holiday season.

“Wonderful Christmastime” is a Christmas song by Paul McCartney, released in November 1979 following Wings’ album “Back to the Egg.” Recorded during the sessions for his solo album McCartney II, it marked McCartney’s return to solo work after eight years. Despite mixed reviews from music critics, the song has become a beloved holiday classic, receiving consistent airplay during Christmas seasons. It charted well in several countries, reaching the top 10 in Austria, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, and the UK, and the top 20 in Canada, Sweden, and Switzerland.

McCartney wrote and recorded the song on his own, and it was characterized by its catchy melody and upbeat arrangement. The song’s promotional music video featured McCartney and members of Wings, filmed at the Fountain Inn in Ashurst and the Hippodrome Theatre in Eastbourne. “Wonderful Christmastime” achieved moderate success in the UK and the US upon its release, but it has since become a staple of holiday playlists and radio broadcasts.

Don’t forget to hang up your sock!

“Happy Holiday” was introduced by Bing Crosby and Marjorie Reynolds (voice dubbed by Martha Mears) in the 1942 film Holiday Inn. Though often associated with Christmas, the song is performed in the film on New Year’s Eve and expresses a wish for ongoing happiness throughout the year.

The song is sometimes combined in a medley with Kay Thompson’s “The Holiday Season,” a pairing popularized by artists like Andy Williams.” The Andy Williams Christmas Album” was released by Columbia Records in 1963. The album dominated the Billboard special Christmas Albums and Singles sales charts, consistently securing the top spot in both categories during that year. It also achieved the same feat in subsequent holiday seasons. The album’s success led to its Gold certification by the Recording Industry Association of America in 1964 and later Platinum certification in 1986.
